Journey on the Via Appia Antica

The Via Appia Antica, recently nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status, is not just a road, but a true time machine to the past. Roman villas and catacombs are just one example of the heritage preserved over the centuries in this wonderful open space outside the city centre.

The route along the Via Appia Antica can be done by hiring a bike on site or on foot. On this tour you can admire the tomb of Cecilia Metella and the medieval castle erected by Pope Boniface VIII. You will see the Villa of Maxentius and its Circus (3rd century A.D.) and the Tomb of Romulus, actually the dynastic Mausoleum of the family of Emperor Maxentius.

Next you will encounter the Church and Catacombs of San Sebastiano until you reach the Catacombs of San Callisto and Porta Capena, where the described route stops, but this is not the only route! Click here to discover all the itineraries.

*These are just some of the wonders that can be seen along the route, to visit some of them you need a ticket, for prices and opening hours we suggest you visit the dedicated page by clicking here.

To go to the beginning of the route from the campsite, from the bus stop just outside the campsite you can take bus no. 246 or 247 (direction Cornelia for the 246 or Cipro Metro Station for the 247) which will take you to the Metro A station Cornelia. From there, you can take the metro to Arco di Travertino station and take bus n° 660 and get off at the Cecilia Metella stop.

On the way back, simply take the bus n° 118 in the direction of Colosseum, get off at the Aventino/Circo Massimo stop and from the Circo Massimo metro stop, in the direction of Jonio, get off at the Termini stop, from there take the A metro to the Cornelia stop and then on the same route you can take one of the two buses mentioned above (direction Malagrotta for the 246 and Stazione Aurelia for the 247) to the supermarket stop in front of the campsite.
